What is Negative Space?

Negative space is the area around, between, or inside the subjects of an artwork. Far from being empty, it shapes perception, creates tension, and enhances balance. In many traditions, from Japanese ink painting to modern minimalism, negative space is considered just as meaningful as the object itself.
